Hormone Replacement Therapy
Estrogen Replacement Therapy by Pellet Implant II

Many of my patients and I consider estrogen pellets the most satisfying delivery method of estrogen to patients. The hormone in the pellets is estradiol. This is the exact estrogen molecule made by a woman's ovaries. Estradiol pellets were developed over 50 years ago. I first inserted them 30 years ago.

The reason you may not have heard of pellets is because they are not made by drug companies. That is because, as a natural substance, no one can own a patent on estradiol. The drug companies must be able to patent drugs in order to have exclusive rights to sell them. Therefore they are not interested in estridiol pellets, and no advertising of pellets is done.

Initially the idea may not sound appealing, but the insertion procedure is done in the office, is quick, and pain medication is given. Once a patient has had her first pellets, she realizes the insertion is nothing to be concerned about. The pellet is the size of 1/4 inch of pencil lead. Each pellet insertion lasts 5-6 months on average.

The key to successful estrogen replacement is to be able to keep the blood level of estrogen as smooth as possible. Studies have shown that no other estrogen therapy can provide a smoother level than pellets. We check the level and make sure it is the proper concentration for each individual.
